The first batch of Gueuze Cuvée René was released in 1994 at the suggestion of the U.S. importer for Lindemans, Merchant du Vin.<ref name=GeuzeKriek>Jef Van den Steen,[[Books#Geuze & Kriek: The Secret of Lambic Beer|Geuze & Kriek: The Secret of Lambic Beer]], 2012</ref> It is named for René Lindemans, who was the 6th generation master brewer at Lindemans before retiring and passing his share of the brewery on to his son in 2006. In April 2015, Lindemans released a [[Cuvée_René_Special_Blend_2010|special blend]] of Cuvée René upon the inauguration if their new facility.
