Overview

De Bascule is a rustic “volkscafé” (traditional working-class pub) located in Bellingen, a village in Pepingen, dating back to 1920. The name “Bascule” comes from the old scale (“bascule”) that used to weigh local agricultural goods — the pub even has an antique scale displayed inside.

History / Side-Notes

Usually the café has around 30 Oude Geuzes and Krieks on its bottle list as well as a selection of lambics on tap.

Owner Jef Koolen also has his own Oude Geuze Bascule, blended with lambic from Sako aged in Jim Beam whiskey barrels in the cellar of the café, and released in 2023 (2500 bottles of 75cl).
