Riesling

← Cantillon

Description

Cantillon Riesling is a blend of sixty liters of Riesling must added to a barrel of two year old lambic to produce the beer with a stated goal of including a strong wine yeast in the lambic. It was bottled in 2014 and available in 75cl bottles. Cantillon Riesling was not released to the public, although it was served at a fundraiser for Sharefest.

History / Other Notes

In October of 2013, Cantillon posted a picture on Facebook of a single barrel with the words:

"Riesling 2013 Clos Liebenberg, Lambic Janvier 2012"

and the caption:

"Waiting for the new brew season, we continue some experiment with our wine grower friends. For the first time, we will try a blend of Riesling wort and a two years old Lambic. The wort is coming from the Domaine Valentin Zusslin in Alsace."

The Zusslin domain, located in Alsace encompasses three total vineyards. Zusslin describes Clos Liebenberg as follows:

"Clos Liebenberg (or the “lovely hill”) sits on 3.5 ha (8,7 acres) of slopes facing Southeast, right on the edge of the Grand Cru Pfingstberg. It is planted with Riesling on terraces. This unique place is completely en- closed by hedges and stone walls. It creates a perfect microcosm with a rich biodiversity. In 2003, we started using horses again to work the vineyards and since Februa- ry 2012, Sesame, a Comtoise carthorse, joined the Zusslin team. The result of our growing method and careful selection is a wine with great complexity, elegance, power and con- centration. On the palate, it is focused and straight. The final has a pronounced acidity with a pleasant freshness that gives depth and persistence. For us it is at a level of a Grand Cru."[1]
